Julian Weigl is currently experiencing difficult times at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Last season, he was vice-captain and a regular player, but in the cup, he spent 90 minutes on the bench. Because he had already lost his place in the team council, rumors of a transfer soon emerged. Does Fohlen coach Gerardo Seoane no longer need him?
The Swiss coach doesn’t want to go that far. “The competition is open every week based on training performance, based on adjustments to the opponent. The distances between us are really very minimal in some positions,” he explained at the press conference before the league opener against HSV (Sunday, 5:30 pm).
Anything but a fixed Weigl departure seems to be in the offing. Recently, the Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab is said to have offered 15 million euros as a transfer fee. BMG sports director Roland Virkus’ current position is that Weigl should stay.
However, in an interview on the Gladbach homepage, he also made it clear: “In these days, there is really movement nationally and internationally. You have to take a close look to see if the balance of power changes again and whether an opportunity arises somewhere.”
