In the city of Karachi, there exists a religious institution built with such dedication and hard work that words alone cannot do justice to it. At least for me, it is extremely difficult to express its magnificence in writing. One can only truly grasp its excellence by visiting and observing it personally.
On August 19, 2025, when Karachi was hit by a stormy rainfall, the entire city appeared submerged in water. Major roads and highways were so heavily flooded that movement became nearly impossible. Yet, in the midst of this devastating situation, this institution stood as if it were a beautiful garden. Not a single place was waterlogged, nor was there any difficulty in walking around.
And let it be remembered—this institution was not designed by engineers from Oxford University or other world-class universities. Rather, it was built under the vision and supervision of scholars—men of religion dedicated to spreading the light of Islam.
The founder of this institution was none other than the Grand Mufti of Pakistan, Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad Shafi (رحمہ الله). After him, his noble son, the Grand Mufti of Pakistan, Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad Rafi Usmani (رحمہ الله تعالی), took up the responsibility of developing, improving, and perfecting it. The progress and excellence achieved under his guidance stand as a shining example in themselves—something clearly visible in the video evidence that still exists.
What makes it even more remarkable is that Hazrat Mufti Rafi Usmani (رحمہ الله) would personally stand at the construction site while the institution was being built. Despite his old age, his senior scholarly status, and being the teacher of thousands of scholars, he did not remain seated in the comfort of his chair. Rather, he would personally supervise the work, observing everything closely and giving his valuable suggestions. With his natural gift for organization and management, he ensured that every task was completed in the best possible manner.
It is easy to write, speak, or narrate such incidents, but to act in this way—especially at such an age, after holding such great positions and responsibilities—requires tremendous courage and strength of character. Another striking feature was his noble conduct: never did he scold or insult the workers or laborers, nor did he humiliate them in any way. He would explain matters gently, guide them with patience, and ensure their dignity remained intact. This is the mark of true men of God.
We pray to Allah Almighty to grant Hazrat Maulana Mufti Muhammad Rafi Usmani (رحمہ الله تعالی) immense rewards, to elevate his ranks, to make his grave a garden of Paradise, to shower His divine light upon him, and to bless him with the highest stations in Jannat al-Firdaws. May Allah also grant us the ability, courage, and consistency to benefit from his knowledge, his noble character, his teachings, and his blessed way of life. آمین
