8 observations from Colts Week 3 of preseason unofficial depth chart

Must read

The Colts released their Week 3 of the preseason unofficial depth chart. Here are eight observations from it.

Going into the final week of the preseason, the Indianapolis Colts have released their third unofficial depth chart prior to their matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Now, of note, when it comes to unofficial depth charts, especially in the preseason, take it all with a grain of salt. While there may be a few noteworthy items, this isn’t the be-all, end-all by any means when it comes to where things stand.

Below is the Colts‘ unofficial depth chart on both offense and defense, along with a few quick thoughts.

Colts‘ unofficial depth chart on offense

  • WR: Michael Pittman Jr., Ashton Dulin, Laquon Treadwell, Update Update, Tyler Kahmann
  • LT: Bernhard Raimann, Marshall Foerner, Marcellus Johnson
  • LG: Quenton Nelson, Josh Sills, Mose Vavao
  • C: Tanor Bortolini, Danny Pinter, Wesley French
  • RG: Matt Goncalves, Dalton Tucker
  • RT: Braden Smith, Jalen Travis, Luke Tenut
  • The: Tyler Warren, Mo Alie-Cox, Drew Ogletree, Will Mallory, Jelani Woods, Sean McKeon, Maximilian Mang
  • WR: Josh Downs, Anthony Gould, Coleman Owen
  • WR: Alec Pierce, Adonai Mitchell, Blayne Taylor, Landon Parker
  • QB: Daniel Jones, Anthony Richardson Sr., Riley Leonard, Jason Bean
  • RB: Jonathan Taylor, Tyler Goodson, DJ Giddens, Khalil Herbert, Ulysses Bentley IV, Nate Noel, Nay’Quan Wright

– Of course, the big takeaway here is that there is no longer an ‘or’ between Jones and Richardson, with Jones being named the starter.

– I would say at this point that a few positional battles have taken shape, if not mostly concluded. Tanor Bortolini will be the starting center over Danny Pinter, and Will Mallory’s strong training camp should have solidified him as the fourth tight end if the Colts roster that many.

– Jalen Travis seems to be the go-to swing tackle off the bench, while Luke Tenuta may have earned himself a roster spot with his play against Green Bay.

– If the Colts keep three running backs, which is common around the NFL, my guess right now is that Herbert is the odd man out with Goodson securing the RB3 role.

Colts’ unofficial depth chart on defense

  • OF: Kwity Paye, Tyquan Lewis, JT Tuimoloau, Desmond Little, Marcus Haynes
  • DT: DeForest Buckner, Neville Gallimore, Adetomiwa Adebawore, Devtona Davis
  • NT: Grover Stewart, Eric Johnson II, Tim Smith, Josh Tupou
  • OF: Layer, Samson Empire, Durell Nchami, Isaiah Land
  • WLB: Cameron McGrine, Jayon Carlies, Austin Ajiake
  • MLB: Zaire Franklin, Joe Bachie, Jake Chaney, Joseph Vaughn
  • CB: Charvarius Ward, JuJu Brents, Samuel Womack III
  • FS: Camryn Bynum, Rodney Thomas II, Trey Washington
  • SS: Nick Cross, Daniel Scott
  • N: Kenny Moore II, Alex Johnson, Ladarius Tennison, Chris Lammons
  • CB: Xavien Howard, Jaylon Jones, Jonathan Edwards, Duke Shelley, BJ Mayes

– The fourth defensive tackle spot on the depth chart is up for grabs. Adebawore had a good showing in Week 1, while Eric Johnson stood out in Week 2. Tim Smith also forced a fumble. Four players at this position will see playing time, while potentially five could be rostered, which means one of these players will be left off the 53-man roster.

– Austin Ajiake is ahead of Segun Olubi on the depth chart, which is how things have played out playing time-wise this summer. Olubi has been a core special teams player, but he could be left off the final roster.

– Chris Lammons likely earned a roster spot after his stellar play in Week 2 of the preseason. Xavien Howard, who was just signed, is listed as the starting cornerback opposite of Charvarius Ward.

– With Hunter Wohler on IR, Daniel Scott now has a clear path to making the final roster.

Colts’ unofficial special teams depth chart

  • P: Rigoberto Sanchez
  • PK: Spencer Shrader, Maddux Trujillo
  • H: Rigoberto Sanchez
  • LS: Luke Rhodes
  • KR: Anthony Gould, Ashton Dulin, Tyler Goodson, D.J. Montgomery
  • PR: Anthony Gould, Josh Downs, Coleman Owen

– The competition at kicker appears to be all but over. This is Shrader’s job.
