Tennessee Titans’ Cam Ward on scuffle with Jeffery Simmons, ‘it was what we needed’

Must read

Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward met with the media on Wednesday, and of course, he had to address the practice scuffle that broke out with Jeffery Simmons near the end of Monday’s practice session.

“It was fun. At the same time, I think it was what we needed, though,” Ward continued. “We love competing, especially with me and Jeff. I’m excited to have that man as my teammate.”

In many ways, Ward’s reaction mirrored that of head coach Brian Callahan and Simmons on Tuesday, when they blew it off as part of what takes place in the middle of a heated training camp practice, and as he pointed out, he believes it was something the team needed.

While that may seem like a strange take from a young quarterback, in some ways the incident has seemed to galvanize the team, and truly reveal the family dynamic that is being built within the organization. There is still a long way to go in the 2025 season, and the first real snap has not taken place, but this team appears to be more cohesive than they were at any point during their disastrous 2024 campaign.

Yes, having a quarterback jumping into the fray and instigating fights with defensive tackles might not be a great idea, and I am sure Callahan has had that discussion with Ward. But for Ward, a rookie, to stand up to Simmons just speaks to the confidence the young quarterback has in his teammates to have his back.
