The Chicago Bears will be keeping their quarterback room together for the next few seasons after they announced a two-year contract extension for backup Tyson Bagent on Wednesday.
Bagent, who signed with Chicago as an undrafted free agent in 2023, is the first Bears quarterback to sign a multi-year extension since Jay Cutler in 2014.
Following the announcement of the extension, Bears head coach Ben Johnson detailed what makes Bagent special to him in what he’s seen during their first season together. Before the regular season even starts, Bagent’s attention to detail and understanding the task at hand has blown away his new head coach and certainly was a big reason for the extension.
“I’ve really been blown away by his approach from the spring to the start of camp to where we are now,” Johnson said. “He does a tremendous job knowing what to do, how to do it and getting it done.”
Bagent appeared in five games during the 2023 season, including four starts in place of an injured Justin Fields, where he went 2-2 with 859 passing yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions. From an undrafted rookie free agent who made the depth chart as the team’s three quarterback, to the cemented top backup behind Caleb Williams with the capability to be a starter, Bagent has proven he belongs in the NFL.
As for the Bears, they’ll have Williams and Bagent tied together, beneficial not only for the team, but for both young quarterbacks who can learn and work together in Johnson’s offense.
