When the NFL regular season begins, many in Austin will have their eyes on former Longhorns star Kelvin Banks Jr. Following a stellar career with the LonghornsBanks was selected by the Saints with the ninth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Through the first two games of the preseason, he has shown why New Orleans made him a priority in the first round.
In his first two preseason games, the Texas native has made life easier for Saints quarterbacks. Through 23 pass snaps, the talented offensive lineman has not allowed a sack or any quarterback hurries. He currently owns a 90.1 pass block effectiveness grade. That is an encouraging start for the Saints franchise left tackle.
His success comes as no surprise after what Banks did in college. During his three years as a Longhorn, the Summer Creek High School product played in 42 games. Banks also added to his trophy case just a few months ago when he was named the 2024 Lombardi Award winner and the 2024 Outland Trophy winner.
Over the last few weeks, Banks has also shown great discipline. He has yet to be whistled for a penalty over his 38 offensive snaps. While the streak is bound to end at some point, Banks has been able to adapt to a new system and has made the most of his playing time. On a team full of young talent, Banks has stood out so far.
With the preseason winding down, Banks is a little more than two weeks away from making his NFL debut. The Saints are set to open their 2025 campaign against the Arizona Cardinals on September 7. While the expectations are high for the former Longhorns star, he has shown so far that he is ready to be a force for his new organization.
