Recent Eagles roster moves make a bright Howie Roseman decision look even smarter

Must read

Howie Roseman’s stock continues to rise after recent roster moves highlight his brilliance and anticipation

It’s sometimes hard to enunciate Howie Roseman’s journey and what it looked like. Does one begin by stating Andy Reid taught him? Does it seem right to mention that Chip Kelly banished him? One thing we should state, more often than not, is that he is fiercely loyal to the Philadelphia Eagles and the City of Brotherly Love.

Shortly after taking a beer can to the forehead, he lit a cigar. Eventually, he’d find his way to the ‘Rocky steps’ and bellow out that he bleeds for this city. Say what you will about him. That’s one of the most polarizing things we have seen since Jason Kelce showed up to a parade dressed like a Mummer.

Roseman is built for this city. He heard the calls for his job. He’s never responded when anonymous general managers jealously say he gets too much credit. He keeps outworking everyone. He goes about his business. He has earned the respect of Eagles fans and the admiration of sports platforms and reporters everywhere.

Washington Commanders GM Adam Peters was caught on camera during draft time calling him ‘a pain’. We’ll take it. That’s our Howie Roseman. He’s always on the phone. While other GMs play checkers, he plays chess.

Recently, he executed two trades. On August 4th, he strengthened the defensive backs room by trading Thomas Booker for Jakorian Bennett.

Then, he got more creative. He dealt Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for wide receiver John Metchie and a 2026 sixth-rounder.

That latter move reunited Metchie with some of his Alabama Crimson Tide teammates, including fellow wide receiver DeVonta Smith. It also appears to prove he was staying ahead of the curve, as a roster hopeful seems lost for the entire Eagles season.

Howie Roseman’s John Metchie addition couldn’t have come at a better time

By now, everyone has heard the news. Johnny Wilson underwent surgery on his knee and ankle and won’t be seen until next season. That casts new light on John Metchie, and possibly another on Howie Roseman.

The former is seemingly all of a sudden the fourth wideout on the Eagles’ depth chart. The latter continues to prove he’s always forward-thinking and ahead of the game and his peers.

No, it’s better than that. Roseman is playing the game at an elite level while others are still reading the rulebook. Whether we’re mentioning the NFL Draft, juggling the salary cap, or paying players sooner rather than later, Philly’s vice president/general manager continues to rewrite the rulebook on what elite team management should look like.

Sometimes, skill and research are required. Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than skilled. Roseman is ‘in his bag’ as the saying goes.

He uses every tool in the tool belt. Some may chalk Metchie’s acquisition up to coincidence. That seems erroneous.

When you’re as good as Roseman is at what he does, fortune falls on the bold and well-prepared. Philadelphia is extremely lucky to have this guy.
