What went wrong for Jaguars offense in joint practice vs. Dolphins

Must read

It was a tough day for the Jaguars offense in their joint practice vs. the Dolphins. So what went wrong?

It was a difficult showing for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offense against the Miami Dolphins’ defense in Thursday’s joint practice.

The overall performance by the Jaguars‘ offense was called “sloppy” by John Shipley of Jaguars on SI.

The situation drill at the end of practice, as Shipley described, seemed to encapsulate those issues, with the Jaguars being called for a delay of game, a pass being batted at the line of scrimmage, and then an overthrow to end the possession.

So what went wrong during Thursday’s practice? After practice, Trevor Lawrence shared his thoughts on the performance.

“A little sloppy,” Lawrence said of his performance, via jaguars he si si. “Speaking individually, there was a couple throws I missed and then just a couple miscommunications. It’s good to go against a different defense. We’ve been going against our defense all camp, so just to see different looks, different disguises, to have to really play each play as its own and go back to some of our base rules is good for us as an offense.”

Jamal St. Cyr of News-4-Jax tracked Lawrence’s day and had him completing 8-of-14 passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions. However, St. Cyr also mentioned that one of those touchdowns may have ended in a sack in a live setting.

Not helping matters for Lawrence or the offense overall was the play of the offensive line, which struggled mightily.

Liam Coen’s scheme can shoulder some of the playmaking burden. Lawrence has seemingly adapted well to it, and there is also a lot of speed and playmaking at the skill positions. But without steady play up front, the jobs of those individuals gets much more difficult.

“Kind of just as a measuring stick like hey, this is where we’re at,” Lawrence added. “This is kind of what we showed today. Let’s learn from it and get better. So, I think that’s just an honest assessment of the day. There’s some stuff to clean up, but I thought guys competed hard, flew around. We just got to clean up some of the details.”

If you’d like a silver lining from Thursday’s performance, you can find that with Brian Thomas Jr. At times, Thomas’ camp has been up and down, but when the intensity turns up, he’s at his best.
