New York Giants vs. New England Patriots Player of the Game: QB Tommy DeVito

Must read

The New York Giants hosted the New England Patriots in their final preseason on Thursday night and walked away with a 42-10 victory.

The Giants won all three of their preseason games, and in each game, one player always steps up to give Big Blue the edge. Tonight, that player was quarterback Tommy DeVito.

No, not Jaxson Dart, although Dart played very well when he was on the field. Had he not been taken off for a concussion evaluation (which he passed), this might be a different conversation. But DeVito took the reins in the second half, going 17-for-20 for 198 yards and three touchdowns.

DeVito didn’t throw a single interception or take any sacks. Dart took a sack tonight, and Jameis Winston threw an interception. And while DeVito was on the field for longer than either of the other two, his quarterback rating (147.5) was far better than both Dart (99.7) and Winston (68.2).

It’s unlikely the Giants will carry four quarterbacks into this season, but it’s hard to deny what DeVito has shown over the last few years. He is consistent, he steps up when he’s needed, and he has the support of the players on the field.

If he doesn’t land on the Giants’ 53-man roster, DeVito will be on another team this season.
