Heading into the Pittsburgh Steelers’ preseason finale against the Carolina Panthersone of our most anticipated positional battles to watch was between two starting-caliber punters: Cameron Johnston and Corliss Waitman. But one erred punt might’ve put the competition to bed.
Following a quick three-and-out on the Steelers’ second drive, Waitman was tasked with punting from Pittsburgh’s 35-yard line — but whiffed on his kick, sending it a mere 35 yards out of bounds at the Panthers’ 30.
Johnston’s only punt of the night came on the opening drive — delivering a punt from Carolina’s 46-yard line to inside the 20, but a 10-yard return from Panthers RB Trevor Etienne created a situation where Waitman’s kick showed up on the stat sheet only.
Both Steelers punters only kicked once throughout the contest — but it was clear which punter was the more consistent, with Waitman’s punt looking eerily similar to Pittsburgh’s failed punting project, Pressley Harvin III.
