Peshawar: Continuous heavy rains and flash floods have caused widespread destruction across several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, leaving communities struggling to cope with the damage. According to the provincial disaster management authorities, multiple areas have been declared disaster-hit, with thousands of residents affected.

The districts of Bajaur, Buner, Shangla, Battagram, and Mansehra have been listed as the most severely impacted. These areas have witnessed flash floods, overflowing rivers, and landslides, cutting off several villages from road access. Homes, shops, and farmlands have been washed away, while families have been forced to evacuate to safer locations.

Authorities confirm that Swat, Upper Dir, and Lower Dir are also badly affected, though the level of destruction is relatively less compared to the hardest-hit regions. Swat, in particular, has reported damage to bridges, roads, and hotels, raising concerns about the impact on tourism.

Government Response

Local administration and rescue teams are on high alert, working day and night to provide assistance. Emergency shelters have been set up in several areas, while relief items such as tents, food, and medicines are being distributed among displaced families. The provincial government has directed all departments to remain on standby and ensure timely support for flood victims.

“Several districts are badly affected, and our top priority is to save lives and restore connectivity,” a government spokesperson said. “Relief operations are underway, but challenges remain due to blocked roads and continuous rainfall.”

Challenges on the Ground

The floods have not only damaged homes but also destroyed agricultural land, which may lead to food shortages in the coming weeks. Power outages have been reported in multiple regions after floodwaters damaged electricity infrastructure. Schools and health centers have also suffered structural losses, further increasing the difficulties for local communities.

Rescue officials have warned that the death toll could rise if heavy rains continue. With weather forecasts predicting more rainfall in the coming days, authorities are urging residents of vulnerable areas to move to safer ground.

Humanitarian Concerns

Humanitarian organizations have called for immediate action, stressing the need for clean drinking water, medical aid, and temporary housing. Families displaced by floods are currently staying in overcrowded shelters, raising the risk of waterborne diseases.

Experts also warn that repeated flooding is becoming a long-term challenge for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to climate change and poor infrastructure planning.
