Gen Z Revolution in Nepal: Social Media Ban to Anti-Corruption Movement

Must read

Kathmandu: In recent days, Nepal has witnessed a youth-led uprising that has captured global attention. The protests erupted after the government abruptly banned 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, YouTube, X (Twitter), and WhatsApp.

The Real Cause of the Protest

Although the government described the ban as a “registration issue,” the younger generation saw it as an attack on freedom of expression and a symbol of corruption. For many young people, social media is not just entertainment—it is their voice. Blocking it was perceived as an assault on their future.

Spread and Intensity of the Protest

Thousands of young protesters gathered in Kathmandu’s central areas, including Maitighar Mandala and outside Parliament. What began as a peaceful demonstration quickly escalated, with protesters storming government buildings and chanting against corruption. Security forces responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons, and in some instances, live fire.

Casualties and Losses

The violent clashes left at least 19 people dead and hundreds injured. Authorities imposed curfews in several cities and deployed the army to the streets.

Government Response

Under mounting pressure, the government was forced to lift the social media ban. The Interior Minister resigned, while growing public anger now threatens the Prime Minister’s position. Analysts believe this is more than just a reaction to a ban—it is a broader movement against corruption, nepotism, and lack of transparency in governance.

Message from the Youth

Young protesters declare this is their generation’s revolution. They are also raising their voices against the “Nepo Kids”—children of political elites who inherit power without merit. On social media, hashtags like #StopCorruptionNotSocialMedia are trending widely.

What Lies Ahead

This uprising has the potential to reshape Nepal’s political landscape. If youth pressure continues, major political change is inevitable. Experts say this movement is not confined to Nepal alone—it sends a strong message across the region: the younger generation will no longer remain silent about their rights and freedom of expression.
