India Releases Additional Water from Sutlej at Harike, Informs Pakistan

Must read

Islamabad, September 7: India has released additional water into the Sutlej River from the Harike Barrage and officially notified Pakistan of the development.

According to details, the Government of India communicated to Islamabad on September 7 that water is being discharged from Harike due to rising river levels. The notification stated that the release is part of India’s management of its reservoirs following increased water inflows.

Authorities in Pakistan have confirmed receiving the information and are closely monitoring the situation. Relevant departments, including the Punjab Irrigation Department and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), have been alerted to take precautionary measures in case of rising water levels in downstream areas.

The release of water from India could potentially raise the water flow in the Sutlej River within Pakistan, especially affecting low-lying regions and riverine communities. Rescue and relief agencies have also been advised to remain on standby.

This development comes at a time when both countries regularly exchange information under the Indus Waters Treaty, which governs water sharing of transboundary rivers.
