Kyle Shanahan non-committal on QB picture for 49ers final preseason game

Must read

There doesn’t appear to be a plan just yet on how San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will deploy his quarterbacks for the preseason finale Saturday vs. the Los Angeles Chargers.

In a normal year he might use the final preseason game as an opportunity for some starters to get at least a little preseason action. With injuries mounting, however, the plan with starters could change in order to avoid additional injury problems at the top of the depth chart.

Shanahan said he’s going to let the entire practice week play out before deciding who he’s going to start at quarterback when the Chargers visit Levi’s Stadium.

“I haven’t decided yet,” Shanahan said. “I initially planned on playing some guys. To be honest, I’m getting less on that right now. Especially with Mac (Jones) being out, that’s why we brought in (QB) Nate (Sudfeld) too because I know we’re going to want at least two other guys to play besides (QB) Brock (Purdy), If he does go. But I’ll decide on that after these next two practices.”

If Purdy doesn’t start, the club would turn to either Sudfeld or Carter Bradley, who has served as the third QB on the depth chart in Saturday’s game vs. the Raiders when Purdy started. However, Sudfeld has more NFL experience as a 2016 draftee, and he may be the signal caller the 49ers want orchestrating the first part of the game.
