Rapid Construction Along River Ravi Raises Alarms, Experts Warn of Future Risks

Must read

Lahore: Unchecked construction along the banks of the River Ravi has sparked growing concerns among residents and environmental experts. Houses and settlements are rapidly expanding near the bridge, shrinking the river’s natural width and leaving little space for water flow.

Eyewitnesses noted that if the river had remained dry for a few more years, residential structures would likely have stretched all the way across to the opposite bank. Locals fear that the unchecked spread of housing not only undermines the river’s ecosystem but also poses significant risks in the event of flooding.

Environmental experts have cautioned that such unregulated development could prove disastrous. “When rivers are deprived of their natural course, even moderate rainfall or unexpected flooding can devastate nearby settlements,” one expert stated, emphasizing the need for strict regulations to preserve the river’s natural flow.

In response, officials from the local administration acknowledged the issue, assuring that action will be taken against illegal encroachments along the Ravi. A spokesperson added, “The government is committed to safeguarding the river’s ecological balance. Plans are being prepared to restrict further construction and remove structures built too close to the riverbanks.”

Civic groups and urban planners have urged swift and decisive measures, stressing that protecting the Ravi is vital not only for environmental sustainability but also for the safety of thousands of residents living in the surrounding areas.
